News from e-malt Poland: Top three breweries of Poland sold 5.66 million hl of beer in Q1 2005

Three Polish largest breweries, which are the members of Polish beer association Browary Polskie, control 90% of Poland’s beer market. In the first quarter on 2005 these breweries sold 5.66 million hl versus 5.42 million hl in the first quarter of 2004. The results were revealed on April 28 by Danuta Gut from Browary Polskie.

Browary Polskie estimates that Poland's beer market is the fifth largest in Europe after Germany, Great Britain, Russia and Spain and the tenth largest worldwide, in terms of sales.

The three largest breweries operating in Poland are: Kompania Piwowarska, owned by the major worldwide brewer SAB Miller accounts for 37.2% of Polish beer market; Zywiec, owned by the Holland's Heineken, with 36%; and listed Polish brewer Carlsberg Okocim with 15%.

The current leader in the Polish beer sector, Kompania Piwowarska, increased its beer sales by 19.8% to 2.05 million hl in the first quarter of 2005, from 1.7 million hl in Q1 2004. The company estimates its market share at 37.2% at the end of Q1 2005 - maintaining its leading position for the third consecutive quarter. Kompania Piwowarska plans to further increase both market share and sales in 2005. "We expect continuous growth, we always develop so we expect to further increase our market share and plan to record at least a 3% growth in beer sales in 2005," KP's general director Karl Lippert told Interfax.

The second largest beer maker, Zywiec, expects to grow along with the market in 2005. "It's hard to predict beer sales before the peak time in the summer months but with our Q1 2005's result we have returned to the expected level of 3-3.5% growth after poor results from Q2 and Q3 2004. We want to maintain growth in line with the market and increase our market share," Zywiec CEO Nico Nusmeier told Interfax. Zywiec's market share is estimated at 36%.

The third big Polish brewery, Carlsberg Okocim, raised its sales of beer by 7% to 772,000 hl in Q1 2005 from 718,000 hl in Q1 2004 and estimates at least 5% growth for the whole of 2005. "It depends a lot on the weather but we plan to record at least a 5% growth of sales in 2005 - although our ambitions exceed that level, of course," Carlsberg Okocim's president Marcin Pirog told Interfax. The company plans to grab more of the beer market in 2005. "We currently have a 15% market share but we want to grow faster than the market so our market share should grow too," Pirog added.
